Frequently Asked Questions

Hospice Care Questions, Answered Honestly.

We know you have questions — and you deserve real answers. At Veritas Hospice & Palliative Care, Veritas means truth. That’s exactly what you’ll find here.

Hospice care is a specialized type of medical care focused on comfort rather than cure. It is designed for patients who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and have a prognosis of six months or less to live — if the illness follows its expected course.
But here's what most people don't realize: hospice is not about giving up. It's about shifting the goal of care from fighting a disease to maximizing quality of life. That means managing pain, controlling symptoms, and making sure your loved one is as comfortable and peaceful as possible — in the place they call home.
At Veritas, hospice care includes a full team working together on your behalf — registered nurses, hospice aides, social workers, chaplains, and bereavement counselors. We coordinate all hospice-related medications, medical equipment, and supplies. And we are available to your family 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This is one of the most common fears families bring to us — and we want to address it directly.
Choosing hospice is not giving up. It is choosing a different kind of hope. Hope for comfort over suffering. Hope for peace over pain. Hope for meaningful time together rather than time spent in hospitals and treatment rooms.
Many families tell us that starting hospice sooner than they expected gave their loved one more quality time — more alert days, more conversations, more moments that mattered. When pain and symptoms are well-managed by a dedicated team, patients often feel better than they did before hospice began.
At Veritas, we believe in giving families honest information so they can make the best decision for their loved one. We will never rush you. We will walk through everything with you, answer every question, and support whatever path you choose.

To qualify for hospice care, a physician must certify that a patient has a life-limiting illness with a prognosis of six months or less if the disease follows its natural course. Common diagnoses that lead to hospice eligibility include:
  • Cancer of any type
  • Dementia and Alzheimer's disease
  • Congestive heart failure (CHF)
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Kidney failure
  • Stroke or neurological conditions
  • ALS and other progressive diseases
Importantly, a patient does not have to be days away from passing to qualify. If a physician determines that the illness is terminal and treatment is no longer curative, hospice may be appropriate — and starting earlier often means more support for both the patient and the family.
If you're unsure whether your loved one qualifies, call us. We'll talk through their situation with you at no cost and help you understand your options clearly.
For most families, hospice care is covered at little to no out-of-pocket cost through Medicare. The Medicare Hospice Benefit covers virtually everything related to the terminal diagnosis, including:
  • Visits from nurses, aides, social workers, and chaplains
  • All hospice-related medications for pain and symptom management
  • Durable medical equipment such as hospital beds, wheelchairs, and walkers
  • Medical supplies like bandages, catheters, and oxygen
  • Bereavement counseling for family members
Medicaid also covers hospice care in most states, and most private insurance plans include a hospice benefit as well. Veritas Hospice accepts Medicare, Medicaid (pending), and private insurance, and we also offer private pay options.
We know that understanding coverage can feel overwhelming. Our team will walk your family through exactly what is covered so there are no surprises.
Your loved one does not have to go anywhere. Veritas Hospice & Palliative Care is a community-based provider, which means we come to your loved one — wherever home is.
That includes:
  • Private residences — your family home
  • Assisted living facilities
  • Nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities
  • Other care settings in the Fort Bend County and greater Houston area
Our team brings the care, the equipment, the medications, and the support directly to your loved one. You don't have to figure out transportation or disrupt their environment. We meet them where they are — and we meet your family where you are emotionally, too.
We know that when a family reaches out to a hospice provider, they are often in a stressful and emotional moment. We take that seriously.
When you call Veritas Hospice & Palliative Care, here's what you can expect:
  1. A real person answers — our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  2. We listen first — we'll ask about your loved one's situation, answer your questions, and help you understand whether hospice may be the right fit.
  3. We move quickly — once a physician referral and relevant medical records are in place, we can begin care the same day.
  4. Your nurse becomes your guide — a registered nurse will be your primary point of contact and will coordinate the full care team on your behalf.
You don't need to have everything figured out before you call. That's what we're here for.
